White Rappers are Here to Stay
Before Eminem, being a white rapper was considered taboo. No one could do it. This was the thought even though the Beastie Boys had already been successfully doing it for over a decade before Eminem blew up. At this point, skin color shouldn’t matter. Honestly, it shouldn’t have mattered regarding anything ever. If you have talent and can spit, then that is all that is important.
Eminem’s Total Slaughter Battle Rap League is debuting this weekend. Since battle rapping is what got Em exposed to Dr. Dre, eventually launching the career of an icon, it seemed appropriate to reflect on some of the white rappers who paved the way. Who knows? Maybe another will emerge from Total Slaughter.
To be fair, some really bad rappers helped pave the way. Some of these artists are great. Others are terrible but managed to make their way into the mainstream. Which is which is up to you to decide.
