In the early 1970s in New York photographer Camilo José Vergara visited and this is what he saw. He arrived in NY City during the Vietnam war and saw many buildings were abandoned, dirty streets and most parks were empty.

Now, in 2013 Jose says he is happy that he took the early photographs of New York. “I saw glimpses of a sinking city that was disappearing, historical artifacts, personal moments in the life of people, old buildings and it’s all behind us now. New York City is now a different place be it for the good or the bad.”
